Altered Spoons?

Does anyone out there alter spoons? I bought some gold plated spoons the other day...the handles are not ornate but I was looking for ideas on what to do with them. Any ideas???

I began work on a Cat piece on Friday. Another thrift store find...she was very very homely. So I'm getting her spruced up with gesso and then paint, and then we'll see how pretty she can get. ;-)

I decided this last week that I need to really push to get some works to sell on Etsy this spring so that I can get back to Ohio to see my Dad. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers and is slipping fast. I'm afraid that he won't know me before too long and it's already been about 3 years since I last saw him. I talk with him on the phone but it's not the same as in person. My heart has been hurting and I would have gone already but like so many others, my finances are so strained that I couldn't even consider it. I know that sounds extreme but we're in extreme times with my husband on disability and my health problems. So...I will be putting up creations on my etsy regularly for the next month. But the first probably won't come till next week.

Please leave some creative words for me...ideas on spoons and anything else you want to say. I would love to hear from you.

  1. Lisa, I'm from Ohio too. Warren, Ohio. Where is your family from? I hope you do get to see your dad. I brought my mother down here from Warren when she was diagnosed with alzheimers as well. She lived with me for 6 years before passing. I don't regret having her here with me but it was the hardest thing I've ever done...to watch a parent waste away to that disease is very depressing.

I will watch for what you do to the cat. Should be interesting since he is really cute.

    Best,
    Cheryl

  2. Hi Cheryl, my dad and brother live in Cincinnati or actually Hamilton I guess it would be. I have only been there a few times.

My dad was diagnosed last year but had been having memory problems for a while. I was alarmed when my brother told me that he has to explain to my dad who I am. Dad has been an intellect for his whole life and this is the worst thing in his mind that could happen. I guess pretty soon, he won't realize that. He's healthy as can be, though, except for the Alzheimers. He's 84. Thanks for sharing with me.

    Hugs.

  3. Gosh Lisa, I don't know about the spoons. I've never worked with them before, other than a couple of wooden spoons that I did made into rather bizarre looking figures with paperclay. I'm curious to see what others suggest.

Looking forward to seeing the 'prettified' cat!

I hope you can get out to visit your Dad soon. My Dad is now 87, still lives on his own, but has become quite frail. He lives a 5 hour plane flight from me and I haven't seen him in 3 years either. I sympathize with you.

    Hugs,

    Sue

  4. Lisa, I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad--this is such a terrible disease. And I do alter spoons, basically collage on them. I will do one in the future and put it on my blog.

  5. You could resin the spoons -- fill the bowls with pretty things and then fill them with resin.

Thinking of you and your dad.

  7. I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. It's going to be a rough ride as I have gone through it with my in-laws. I will keep you in my prayers.
I saw some spoons & forks bent to make business card holders that were very cute. It was bent into an easel shape then the tip of the spoon bent up to hold the cards, the middle tines on the fork were bent up. One of those things I wish I would have just bought, thought I'd make one but never did.

  9. I can see a collage on canvas with three spoons in the center. The background with lots of texture and very shabby with laces maybe? and paint the spoons with inks so that they look old.
It could make a beautiful piece for a kitchen or those breakfast little corners areas.
    Love your cat sculpture...looks sophisticated.
    Hugs,
    Flor
