Our little shop has been open since September and slowly evolving. We bought this tall hutch at an estate sale and it was just what we needed. See the bench in the back? My husband made that. Most of the things shown sold (hooray!) and it's going into its next evolution.

I created this birdhouse, actually re-worked it from it's former homeliness. Mod Podge fabric on the sides, lots of paint application and removal. It was a good project for my recovery from surgery.

I'm finally about done grieving over the arthritis in my hands. About 8 months ago, I started going to occupational therapy because I have early onset arthritis. I have had to give up playing my guitar, throwing pottery on a wheel, and just being rough on my hands in general. I need to save up what I have left in them for as much art as I can handle.

These are the splints that I wear. Only at night or for hard work now. I had to wear them 24/7 for a few months.

Opened a little shop: vintage and handmade stuff. It's called For the Birds. It will take a little while to get in the black but I have met so many great people! This is the logo that my daughter and I designed:

The sign looks similar except no text under the title. I have a tagline on the back of the card that reads "Vintage Hip" which I think I like better than "A Unique Shop"

I'm trying to get back on my creative feet again. I think I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and that is a very sad thing for an artist. I will know more in the coming weeks. But my hands are starting to twist.

Altered Spoons?

Does anyone out there alter spoons? I bought some gold plated spoons the other day...the handles are not ornate but I was looking for ideas on what to do with them. Any ideas???

I began work on a Cat piece on Friday. Another thrift store find...she was very very homely. So I'm getting her spruced up with gesso and then paint, and then we'll see how pretty she can get. ;-)

I decided this last week that I need to really push to get some works to sell on Etsy this spring so that I can get back to Ohio to see my Dad. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers and is slipping fast. I'm afraid that he won't know me before too long and it's already been about 3 years since I last saw him. I talk with him on the phone but it's not the same as in person. My heart has been hurting and I would have gone already but like so many others, my finances are so strained that I couldn't even consider it. I know that sounds extreme but we're in extreme times with my husband on disability and my health problems. So...I will be putting up creations on my etsy regularly for the next month. But the first probably won't come till next week.

Please leave some creative words for me...ideas on spoons and anything else you want to say. I would love to hear from you.

Renee is Circling my Head

I'm in a very strange place today. Do you know how it is when you follow blog links and people who leave comments and their links and groups they belong to, etc? It can be such a grand adventure!

On Saturday afternoon it was very rainy and I sat looking out my window and I worked on my website. Every now and then I would go to my open blog window and visit a new site. You see, I had just returned to blogging after many months of the blahs.

Somehow I landed at Renee's blog, Circling my Head. The first post that I read was from her daughter because Renee is now passing over to the next life as a result of Inflammatory Breast Cancer. I saw a picture of Renee and her precious little grandaughter walking, and my heart was torn apart.

I read Renee's words for hours, old blogs, blogs by topics, went back to the beginning blog. I read again yesterday for some time. Renee has touched my life and I have never even exchanged words with her. She brought to light things that I have thought of but didn't want to talk about, not even to myself. Deep fears, when not faced, can be a demon that poisons your every glance at the landscape. This is so with me.

Renee addressed all of those demons. And people didn't run away! She is an honest, gutsy, and loving woman who I admire, although I don't know her. But I do. She is part of me. And she cusses, besides! I like that ;-)

I generally shy away from cancer topics on my blog because I figure that no one wants to read about them. My own journey through breast cancer 3 years ago till now has left me reeling. I honor Renee today and want to say that it was her words that led me through a place of pain over the last couple of days to some real healing and self-care. I cannot really describe what has happened...I may be able to create something eventually that expresses it. This thing is beyond words.

To be so loved and to love as much as Renee does, that is my wish in life. Be free, sweet angel, Renee. Know that I love you, too.

Another View of the Magic Mushroom

Thanks for all of your responses on my Magic Mushroom. I did it with Marilyn Radzat's class at my website but still have to finish it. Here is the outside view as it sits on my worktable. My plans are to finish painting the rock path and edging (sculpted from Apoxie Sculpt) and add reindeer moss to the gourd base between the paths. I also have some mini mushrooms going to put on the base. It measures about 13" high.

WIPs (Works in Progress)

This seems to be a common aggravation of many artists and crafters: We start many things that we don't finish.

I think that there are two reasons that we don't finish projects:

The amount of work needed to finish the work is overwhelming. Maybe we didn't realize how much work would be required when we started.
We have simply lost interest and love for the project. There are no points here for finishing for the sake of finishing. If you don't love it, you are wasting your time.

I have several of WIPs myself and I actually had to let a lot of the old ones go. I chalk those projects up to a learning experience. I had to come to terms with the fact that I didn't have the passion to finish them. There is nothing wrong with letting an old project go because you're actually making room for the new projects that you will create with your honed skills.

For the projects that you do still love and want to finish, my suggestion is this:

1. Make a list of the projects that you still love and want to finish. (If you have too many, try to let a few go. It feels good to give away or simply throw away things that you don't love).
2. Place a checkmark by the one that you want to finish the most or at least first.
3. Ask yourself what one small thing you can do to progress on that project. So many times we become overwhelmed by the amount of work that we must put into a work to finish it. We can go under the radar of overwhelm by thinking of one tiny, little step to finish. And only do that tiny little step.
4. Repeat step 3 until your project is done.
5. Repeat steps 1-4.

The Inspiration of Poppies

It was Georgia O'Keefe's work that led me into the dream that I could be a full-time artist. In 1989, I saw an exhibition of her work, my very first trip to an art museum. My head swam with visions of her art and I something in me harmonized with her work and led me to know that Art was my passion. Her Poppies paintings are particularly favorites of mine and inspire me to look inside to my own expression.

Back from my trip and new bracelets

I made it back home after more than a week away. I don't leave again until next Monday. I have a class to teach in Placerville on the 9th. This is the project that I'm teaching. It's made from a gourd and I call it the Jeweled Leaf Bowl.

I spent most of the first days in bed with the flu, along with my grandson and daughter. Good thing her husband was away and that her bed was big enough for us sickies. We did some art, Bubbies (that's me) got on the skateboard with the kids several times (no pics to prove it, though), and I hit up a neat craft store, a bead store, and a cool little gallery called the Shabby House.

Road Trip!

On Sunday, after my daughter's baby shower, my best friend Cathy and I set off from California to Boise to make it to the birth of her daughter. My daughter also lives in Boise as well as two of my grandsons.

Have you ever taken a road trip with a best friend?

We've travelled a lot together, mostly flying. This was our first really big road trip after being friends for 34 years! We were punchy, laughed a lot, and arrived after 13 hours of driving with just a few stops.

One stop in Oregon was a little like Deliverance. Scary!

They call me Bubbies. And there are so many of them, so much boy energy! Bubbies gets tired.

Cigar Box Shrine Auction

Many of you know that Rebecca (Recuerdamicorazon) organized a Cigar Box Shrine auction with many talented artists, some famous like our own Marilyn Radzat, Michael DeMeng, Misty Mawn, and others. The auction will benefit The Street Children of Oaxaca project.

I don't know how many of you have actually followed the link to find out more about this charity so I will give you a little summary.

About Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots

Harold and Jodi Bauman of Mississippi founded Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots in 1996. They were on vacation in Oaxaca and although they loved the area, they were disturbed to find that so many children were out selling little trinkets in the parks and on the streets during school and nightime hours. Since the founding of the organization which helps by sponsoring children so that they can go to school, they have helped many many children and their families. they have added a medical and food assistance program.

Oaxaca's poorest families cannot afford education, basic health care, or a nutritious meal for their children. Government services are minimal and difficult to access. Education is not "free" in Mexico as it is in the US, so the poorest often must choose between feeding their children or sending them to school.

The Cigar box Shrine Auction begins on March 1st but you won't actually be able to go in to bid on the auction until it begins.

Yep, I've been tagged!

This was taken in January with my camera in its trusty underwater case! This was a beautiful day on the Big Island near Kona and I got in the middle of some schools of fish: it was a heavenly feeling.

I spend most of my time promoting other people's art and I love doing that. But I thought I would give you a glimpse of the work that I have done.

My style tends to be earthy; I love to work in natural mediums.

Here are some of my gourd dolls using a gourd as a base and paperclay sculpted face and limbs:

My Comments on Flor's Art

Flor Larios asked me in a comment on my last blog to tell me which words I would use to describe her art. I had already been to Flor's site and I like her work to start with.

First I'll show you some of her work and then I will share the comments that we exchanged.

Flor has two different styles: her almost whimsical paintings and her collage work.

My Comment on Flor's Blog:

"...Words to describe your paintings: feminine, whimsical, and light-feeling. I see large eyes that see everything and smaller mouths that don't say too much. Quiet observation. I see a celebration of being a woman.

Now that being said, I want to talk about your Frida Collages. The shrine that you recently did with Frida in Traction [The Broken Column] is a powerful piece. The crosses, too. Frida sees and doesn't speak. She cries silently in her paintings and I think that you have expressed it beautifully. Especially in the one where she has the skull on the forehead. Did you put that in there? If so, it was brilliant. She sees her mortality. There is a boldness in those designs and you have tied the details together beautifully. I would love to see you make more of that type of collage as well as your paintings..."

"I want to tell you a quick story about seeing the Frida exhibit in San Francisco last summer. I had seen the Frida in traction [The Broken Column] painting in books before but when I stood in front of the actual work, it felt like all the pain and sadness came flooding into me and I understood what she was trying to say. I nearly couldn't stop crying. And the collage you did like that brought it back and expressed it very well. Very nice work, Flor!"

And Flor's comment back to me:

"I just have to say wow! You described my personality looking at my paintings...I am impressed! ..."

Words to Describe Art: A Challenge!

The question was raised in Dayle Doroshow's post at That Creative Place's blog: how can we describe designs or pieces of art that have a certain quality? She was looking for a word that meant something like "Sophisticated" but when she looked the word up, she realized it didn't fit at all. She chose to use the words, "natural elegance". It's a good term.

This is what natural elegance looks like to me:

It really got me thinking and I realized that this is the same kind of thing that I ran across while studying art and art history. So seldom can one word describe or categorize any given piece of work in art or craft. And I think about the comments that we leave for others when we show our work...beautiful....gorgeous...cute...etc.

But how do you describe this?
It more complicated than to just give it a one-word comment.

The reason that art and craft is so hard to sum up is because there are so many different aspects to a work. You can talk about the color (bright, muted, subdued, bold, luminous), the shape (angular, linear, organic, proportional), the composition (well-composed, asymmetrical, balanced, unified) and we haven't even brushed on meaning, genre, or other elements of art. All of these things apply to craft as well as fine art.

It would be fortunate for us if we had many descriptive words just for the word "beautiful" in art like the Inuit people have for snow (urban legend, BTW). But it's not that simple. I challenge you to look closer at the works that you see and comment on to find something more specific to say about what you're looking at. It can be a teaching tool in our own art-making.

This hasn't answered any of Dayle's question because I'm not so sure there is a word that describes natural elegance. Much of it lies in one's own interpretation of the word. Maybe the most important thing is to know what the words mean to us and what we're looking for in our art.

I haven't touched on the negative words to describe a work. But we should be aware of these, also because we can learn from these as well. We probably won't be leaving any of those on our favorite blogs, though.

Etsy is really something, isn't it? I think that it has been a big part of this craft Renaissance that we're seeing. The drive to buy handmade (and to sell) is taking off!

Here are some artists that you may not have seen.

Cathy is a Polymer Artist and Etsy Seller (name dumauvobleu) who lives in France and makes gorgeous polymer beads:

Alison (Etsy Seller Earthtonesonline) is another polymer bead artist. She gets really interesting color patterning and her bird beads are to die for!

CHA Report

I'm just back from CHA (Craft and Hobby Industry show). Christi Friesen roomed with me and that was fun! I feel like I've known her forever. We talk on the phone but I hadn't actually met her face-to-face.

Paverpol was probably the highlight of the show for me....I made a figure using paper towels for the draping (and purse). I like the back better than the front. I used a mannequin, paper towels, and cotton fiber for the hair.

Talking to Rose and Christa gave me a whole new appreciation for Paverpol (which I had little experience with) Anyway, looks like I'm going to certify for them to teach Paverpol!

I took these workshops and these are the goodies that I came away with:

My favoritist workshop was with Thomas Mann, Metal Artist, on learning to saw metal.
It was fantastic and I learned so much on sawing that I can even apply to my gourd work!
He's releasing a series of kits that we're considering carrying.
All I have to show from it are some little stars and shapes that I cut from brass but I did buy a Learn-to-saw kit! He's really awesome!

This is my wax/altered/mixed media book cover. Not sure how well I like it. But it was a beeswax class with Suze Weinberg (who is quite a character! I love her!)

From Suze Weinberg's class...a book, wax stylus, chipboard die cuts and lots of other things.

Claudine Helmuth's Mixed Media Madness...that's my project and all of the paints
and brushes that I got to take home.

This is a hardware bracelet that I did in Heidi Boyd's class.

We came away with her newest book also!

Things that I found interesting were lots of gorgeous resin pendants. I saw people embedding gorgeous things into the pendants, jumprings, crystals, all kinds of sparklies! We're going to carry a line of settings (bezels) to inlay polymer and resin into and resin with molds also.

Working on a New Project

I've been working on My "Mini Sailor's Valentines" as a low cost project/class at my site. I'll put a link here when I get it posted. I finally found a use for the coral hearts that I collected last May in Hawaii. But any kind of heart, stone, polymer, other clay, could also be used.

This is a shell collage that I did over a picture frame for my daughter for Christmas. I like the brown palette that I used. (Click on the picture for a larger image)

I'm getting ready to go to Hawaii again next week: this time I'm teaching at a gourd festival on the big island. There is lots to do to get ready!

New Years Thoughts:

I have been practicing being more "in the moment", something that is talked about a lot but I had never quite gotten the concept of. I read Eckhart Tolle's A New World and it finally makes sense! This is the best thing I have ever started doing for myself, for my art. I wish you blessings of creativity for this coming year.

Chase had such a great time making them! He was laughing himself silly.

Almost done with Christmas makings, I have a few more things to do on a mosaic lamp and then it will be Christmas. I tell myself every year that I will start early but I haven't as of yet. I will get it down one of these years. :-)
